mumsDU
moms united and mandated to saving the lives of Drug Users

Because it could be anyone's child.

The loss of a child to substance use is not a call for empathy; it's a call to action!

Inaction breeds doubt and fear.
Action breeds confidence and courage.

If you want to conquer fear, do not sit at home and think about it. Go Out and Get Busy!
~ Dale Carnegie

mumsDU is a coalition of Canadian mothers and fathers who have lost sons and daughters to a drug overdose and other drug related harms. We openly share the experiences of our children’s drug related deaths with communities, policy makers and professionals across Canada and Internationally in order to bring awareness to this crisis and affect much needed change in how the World views Addiction.

Our History  A conversation between two bereaved mothers, Donna May and Jennifer Woodside, revealed their mutual frustration with the lack of parental voices speaking out on the growing epidemic of death by substance use and determined that nothing would be learned from their children’s deaths by being silent. Early in the summer of 2015, they formed the NFP NGO they named mums united and mandated to saving the lives of Drug Users (mumsDU) for the purpose of being the parental voice in Global negotiations in world drug treaties.

mumsDU represents the parental voice on substance use and the need for drug policy reform Provincially and Federally in Canada and Internationally.

not for them."

mumsDU advocates on an International platform for drug policies that work to keep our drug users alive and free from harm because we have learned through our personal experiences that there is no hope for recovery when your substance user has died.

mumsDU advocates for harm reduction policies specific to opioid addiction that ensure ready access to detox and treatment facilities that are effective and timely and for all.

mumsDU advocated for access to Naloxone (Narcan), the opioid overdose reversal medication, for all first responders including the TRUE first responders: family and friends. OUR VOICES WERE HEARD!

mumsDU appealed for a Good Samaritan legislation that takes the fear of arrest away from calling 911 when in the presence of an overdose. OUR VOICES WERE HEARD!

mumsDU calls for all health and social care providers to use compassion and understanding when interacting with drug users and their families and supporters.

mumsDU supports initiatives for the continuing education of doctors who prescribe opioid medications.

Our Work mumsDU has represented the voice of parents at Drug Policy Conventions such as the Alberta Harm Reduction Conference in CD; Canadian Association of Community Healthcare Centres Conference in Ottawa, CD; Drug Policy Alliance Reform Conference in Washington, USA; the United Nations General Assembly on the World Drug Problem in New York, USA; the BC Overdose Action Exchange in Vancouver, CD, the ODRPN Committee, Ontario, CD; Health Quality Ontario Committee, Ontario, CD and the Federal Minister of Health, the Honorable Jane Philpott's Opioid Conference, Ottawa, Ontario, CD.

mumsDU has been asked to be a contributing organization, presenting our views on the affect of substance use on family when the Opioid Summit to be held this fall and at the International Harm Reduction Conference in May, 2016. mumsDU will attend and present the parental voice at the 2019 United Nations talks on World Drug treaties in Vienna.

While it is too late for both mothers to save their own children, they understand the need for change in order to save the lives of the children not yet lost and for this reason, they will not be silenced.
